Researchers presented several studies aimed at eradication or functional cure of HIV on Thursday at the 19th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) in Seattle.
Opening a press conference to discuss these findings, John Mellors from the University of Pittsburgh likened the state of cure research today to where we were with antiretroviral therapy more than 15 years ago.
Researchers presented data on agents that activate latent HIV in resting cell reservoirs, protect CD4 T-cells from infection, and block immune exhaustion.

But these represent only initial steps, Mellors emphasized. As with AZT (zidovudine; Retrovir) in the 1980s, he recalled, it took another decade until effective combination antiretroviral therapy became available, and another 5 years before it was simple.
"I don’t think anyone should doubt that progress is going to continue towards achieving a cure," said Mellors. "We're on road and we're moving in the right direction."
